How to master your home’s HVAC maintenance

Maintaining your AC unit can be a hard task to undertake, especially if you’ve never had to worry about maintaining one before.

Learning how is worth the effort! Why? A well-maintained AC system will last longer, work more efficiently, and cost you less money overall in energy bills and repairs.

Here are some helpful AC maintenance do’s and don’ts:

Do:

  • Regularly change your AC filters

Aim to change your AC filters every one to three months to ensure good air quality and proper air flow.

  • Schedule regular tune-ups

A dirty AC system can diminish indoor air quality, lead to a higher AC bill, and even cause damage that results in costly repairs. We recommend scheduling two tune-ups a year to keep your HVAC system running at peak performance.

During your tune-up, the HVAC technician should:

  • Inspect and clean condenser coils
  • Inspect and replace HVAC air filters
  • Recharge the refrigerant
  • Inspect and clean the condensate drain
  • Inspect all wiring
  • Lubricate all moving parts.

  • Inspect your AC unit regularly

Be sure to inspect your AC unit every two months. Check for leaks, pests, and debris buildup. To ensure proper air flow, keep the surrounding area of both indoor and outdoor units tidy and free of clutter.

Don’t:

  • Tamper with wires or connections
This is extremely dangerous! Not only could you potentially harm yourself, but you could also cause more damage to your AC system. Repairs should always be carried out by a certified HVAC technician.

  • Overlook unusually high bills

High AC bills could be a sign that there is something wrong with your AC unit. Be sure to have a professional take a look if you notice that your AC bill is higher than usual.

  • Disregard the importance of professional services
Certified HVAC technicians have the necessary skills, equipment, and training to perform efficient, quality AC maintenance—which is critical to maintaining a well working system.

Skipping those AC tune-ups can lead to bigger issues that could have easily been avoided by regular maintenance.
